Description
ASTRAKHAN is based on the original indian ink artwork drawn from vintage persian lamb fur, commonly called Astrakhan.
You can read more about the inspiration and see work in progress images here (opens in new tab).
Meticulously rendering the structure of the original fur, ‘Astrakhan’ is a mesmerising pattern with a large and almost undetectable repeat. The overall effect of optical illusion can be enhanced through the texture of velvet or matte soft fabrics, creating an impression of depth and supporting the illusion of fur, turning the drawing back into something tactile and mysteriously organic in appearance.
Astrakhan forms part of my signature Fur Drawing collections, where I create hybrid aesthetics between figurative and textural. The structure of these organic textures invoke something mysterious, whilst translating cultural associations of opulence and luxury.
